Our approach
Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change, adapt and create new connections as a result of experiences. The latest research shows that this process can continue throughout our lifetime, lending its support mechanisms to restoring function and training the nervous system.
But well before these recent neuroscientific discoveries, Dr Moshé Feldenkrais developed the Feldenkrais® Method, which is a form of neuromuscular reprogramming using movement and self-awareness to retrain the nervous system. Feldenkrais practitioners do not apply a pre-determined, repetitive technique, but instead create the environment through conditions that affect the somatosensory system , and cerebellum, thus cultivating the capacity for coordinated action and the development of self-image and sensory processing that impacts action. That is why the method is not merely a series of set movements, but a response to the needs of the individual based on their situation, pathology, deficits and experience in the present time.
At the body and brain institute, we rely on the field of neuroplasticity and the tools provided by the Feldenkrais® Method. We work to create the conditions that act to form connections between body and brain in order to achieve change.
